Penang Island of Malaysia has been featured in National Geographic's list of the best places in the world to travel to in 2027, becoming the only destination in Southeast Asia to make the list.
The annual list, unveiled on Oct. 20, features 25 destinations and travel experiences around the world for travelers to explore in the coming year.
The selections were made following a nomination, research and reporting process involving National Geographic's travel experts and Nat Geo Traveler's international editorial teams.
National Geographic highlighted Penang's unique mix of natural beauty and cultural heritage, from George Town's UNESCO-listed historic streets to lush, rainforest-backed beaches, traditional villages and meandering rivers lined with mangroves.
Penang is celebrated across Asia for its vibrant food scene, featuring local favorites such as Char Koay Teow, a wok-fried flat rice noodle dish, and Penang Assam Laksa, a tangy, fish-based noodle soup.
The island boasts acclaimed dining establishments, including Auntie Gaik Lean's Old School Eatery, known for its traditional Nyonya cuisine, and Au Jardin, recognized for its contemporary fine dining experience.
In a statement issued on Oct. 21, State Tourism and Creative Economy Committee chairman Wong Hon Wai described Penang's inclusion in NatGeo list as a proud achievement, highlighting the recognition as an opportunity to introduce the state's unique attractions to a global audience, Bernama reported.
Other destinations featured in the 2027 list include Vestland in Norway, Luxor in Egypt, Niigata in Japan, Chengdu in China, Jaipur in India and Melbourne in Australia.
